Description
Neogab Capsules, manufactured by Hilton Pharma, contain 100 mg of gabapentin per capsule. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used for the treatment of neuropathic pain and as an adjunct therapy for partial seizures.
Uses
Neogab Capsules are indicated for:
- Neuropathic Pain: Effective for managing pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, and other forms of neuropathic pain.
- Partial Seizures: Used as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of partial seizures in adults with epilepsy.
Mechanism of Action
The exact mechanism of action of gabapentin is not fully understood, but it is believed to work by modulating the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain and spinal cord. It may also affect calcium channels, leading to a reduction in neuronal excitability and pain perception.
Dosage
The recommended dosage for adults is typically:
- Initial dose: 300 mg orally on day one, 300 mg twice daily on day two, then 300 mg three times daily on day three.
- Maintenance dose: 300 to 600 mg three times daily, depending on response and tolerability.
- Maximum dose: 3600 mg orally daily in three divided doses.
For children aged 3 to 12 years, the dosage is based on weight and typically ranges from 10 to 15 mg/kg/day in three divided doses, with a maximum dose of 50 mg/kg/day.
Side Effects
Common side effects associated with Neogab Capsules may include:
- Dizziness
- Somnolence (drowsiness)
- Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
- Fatigue
- Peripheral edema
Precautions
- Neogab should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment, as it is primarily eliminated unchanged by the kidneys.
- It may cause dizziness and somnolence, especially during the initial titration phase, which may impair the patient’s ability to drive or operate machinery.
- Abrupt discontinuation of gabapentin may lead to withdrawal symptoms, so it should be tapered gradually
